If you've been searching for energy healing in New Providence, NJ, you've probably run into two names over and over: Reiki and Pranic Healing. They get lumped together, and understandably so — both work with the body's energy field, both are hands-off or light-touch, and both leave most people feeling noticeably calmer than when they walked in.
But they are not the same thing. They come from different lineages, they're delivered differently, and in our experience they tend to suit different people and different problems.
We're Janine and Okisha, Registered Nurses and the founders of UPLIFT Vibrational Wellness Center. We spent years in clinical settings before we ever put our hands over a healing table, and we're going to explain the difference the way we'd explain it to a patient — plainly, without mysticism, and without overselling what either method can do.
Reiki is a gentle, receptive practice. The practitioner acts as a conduit for universal life-force energy, resting hands lightly on or just above the body in a sequence of positions. It's soft, meditative, and deeply relaxing. Most people describe it as warmth, heaviness, or floating.
Pranic Healing is a more systematic, “no-touch” method. The practitioner never physically touches you. Instead, they scan the energy field with their hands, clear congested energy from specific areas, and then direct fresh prana (life energy) into those areas using a defined protocol. It's more clinical in feel — more like a technician working through a checklist.
Both are complementary care. Neither replaces your physician, therapist, or medication. But as an addition to what you're already doing, they can do real work.
A Reiki session at our New Providence studio runs about 60 minutes. You stay fully clothed on a padded table. There's no manipulation, no pressure, no talking required. The practitioner moves through a series of hand positions — head, shoulders, torso, knees, feet — either resting lightly or hovering.
What most people notice first is that their breathing changes. Shoulders drop. The jaw unclenches. That's the parasympathetic nervous system coming online — the “rest and digest” state your body needs to actually repair itself, and the state chronic stress keeps you locked out of.
We wrote a full walkthrough of this if you want the minute-by-minute version: What Actually Happens During a Reiki Session.
Reiki at UPLIFT is $110. We also offer Angelic Reiki ($130) — a variation that layers in guided, invocational work for people drawn to a more spiritual framework.
Pranic Healing looks different from the outside. Developed and systematized by Master Choa Kok Sui, it treats the energy body almost the way a clinician treats the physical one: assess, clear, replenish, stabilize.
Your practitioner will hold their hands several inches from your body and sweep slowly, scanning for areas that feel dense, depleted, or congested. Then comes the cleansing — deliberate sweeping motions to move stagnant energy out — followed by energizing specific centers. There's no physical contact at any point.
Because it follows a protocol, Pranic Healing lends itself well to targeting something specific. If a client comes in and says “it's my lower back, it's been eight months, and nothing is helping,” Pranic Healing gives us a structured way to work that region.
Pranic Healing at UPLIFT is $120.
As nurses, this is the part we refuse to hand-wave.
The research base for both modalities is real but modest. For Reiki, a 2024 meta-analysis in BMC Palliative Care found meaningful reductions in anxiety, and a broader review of randomized trials found consistent effects on anxiety and pain across the larger studies — with the honest caveat that many trials are small. A 2022 Frontiers in Psychology review graded the evidence as moderate-to-high for clinically relevant anxiety and high for stress and depression symptoms, while noting the field needs larger trials.
For Pranic Healing, the evidence base is smaller but growing. A randomized double-blind trial published in 2018 found Pranic Healing, used alongside antidepressants, improved outcomes in mild-to-moderate depression compared to a mock-healing control. More recent randomized work has looked at pain during pediatric procedures.
Here's our honest read: these are complementary therapies with promising but early evidence. They are not cures. They are not substitutes for medical or psychiatric treatment. What they reliably do — and what the research supports most strongly — is help a dysregulated nervous system settle down. For a lot of people living with chronic stress, pain, or anxiety in Summit, Berkeley Heights, Murray Hill, and across Union County, that alone changes the week.
Honestly? You may not need to decide on your own.
If your body has been sending signals for a while — the ones we described in 5 Signs Your Body Is Asking for Energy Healing — the more useful question isn't “Reiki or Pranic?” It's “what's actually going on, and what's the right first step?” That's exactly what our consultation is for.
If you want a rule of thumb in the meantime: choose Reiki if you need to be held. Choose Pranic Healing if you need something worked on. Many of our clients end up alternating between the two, and some add Restorative Hypnotherapy or Intuitive Life Coaching once the nervous system has settled enough to do deeper work.
You can also try our monthly Community Sound Bath — your first one is free — if you'd like to feel what vibrational work is like in a group setting before booking one-on-one.
Book a $25 Integrative Wellness Consultation. It's a focused sit-down with a Registered Nurse where we listen to what's going on, explain your options honestly, and recommend the modality we actually think will help — even if that's not the most expensive one on our menu. The $25 is credited toward your first session.
